John Boyd

A Tribute to John Boyd

Published in Designers, News.

Everyone at felt a great sadness in hearing about the passing of John Boyd last week. A Millinery legend, icon, inspiration and a very kind, humble man.

Born in 1925 in Scotland, John Boyd was based a London based milliner and he designed beautiful headwear for over 75 years. John inspired a generation of hat makers with his stunning designs and his infamous hats that he created for the likes of Princess Diana and The Duchess of Cambridge.

“I like to design for the women’s unique and individual look, regardless of time or fashion. The face dictates the hat”.  – John Boyd

With a strong desire for millinery from a young age, John Boyd took an apprentice position with the most known millinery of the time, Aage Thaarup. This was interrupted by World War II but after it came to an end, John Boyd’s own millinery clientele grew and then came a turning point for Boyd, the moment he made a hat for Anne, Princess Royal. The rest is history. John continued to inspire with his hats everyday and at 89 he was awarded an MBE for his work!

At LoveHats, we feel privileged to have ever worked with such a wonderful creative man. His words will continue to inspire LoveHats, to be the global millinery destination.

Forgetting the likes of Kate Middleton wearing John Boyd's headwear for a moment - Our absolute favourite John Boyd moment is this, a picture of him accompanied by models wearing his designs.
